The Municipal Council of Jasper has two councillors - Mayor Richard Ireland and Councillor Gloria Kongsrud - who represent Council as the Jasper/Hakone SisterCity Visitation committee. Staff member Beryl Cahill is the administration's liaison for the committee.
The Municipality of Jasper and the Town of Hakone, Japan have shared a sistercity relationship since 1972. Delegations take turns in visiting each other approximately every four years. Last year was Hakone's turn, but due to the H1N1 epidemic, they were not able to travel to Jasper in 2009. We have just received word that a delegation of business people will visit Jasper at the end of June 2010for three or four days. We are very excited about their visit.
The Municipality of Jasper and the Town of Hakone also participate in the Jasper/Hakone Student Exchange Programme, where one or two students from each town visit and stay with host families each year. In Jasper, in order for students to be chosen to visit Hakone, students from Jasper Junior/Senior High School's and Ecole Desrochers grade 11 class submit essays on why they feel they would be excellent ambassadors for Jasper in Hakone. Fundraising helps to pay for the airline tickets, and the students contribute a nominal amount also.
In 2010, two students will be chosen to travel to Hakone for three weeks, and in return two Hakone students will travel to Jasper.
